W&G Foyle Ltd

W&G Foyle Ltd (“Foyles”) is one of the United Kingdom's best loved bookstores. Founded in 1903, the store garnered the title “the world's greatest bookshop”. To remain competitive with large, rival bookstore chains, Foyles has recently undergone a complete renovation, both of its interiors, and of its processes and technology. The business is privately owned.

Foyles' new CEO initially assigned PPS to outline potential short, medium and long term improvements across the three areas of buying and merchandising, logistics and IT solutions. The Foyles team implemented our recommendations for buying and merchandising and logistics.

From our suggested IT solutions, Foyles' Board chose to focus on replacing or upgrading the core Electronic Point of Sale (EPoS) and merchandising system. We were retained to investigate the suitability of upgrading the existing IT structure, as well as to examine the offers of potential new providers.

After interviewing and short listing all potential providers and the incumbent, our analyses showed that an upgrade of the client's existing system was the most effective for its needs. To best service these needs, and with Foyles' approval, PPS prepared a six-month development plan for the incumbent provider. The plan instructed the incumbent to supply a full-time professional to work
in-house at Foyles. It also outlined necessary upgrades to the base system, finance system and website as well as improved management reporting.

PPS' recommendations resulted in significant cost savings for the client, in terms of outlay and internal resources. Our advice was unanimously accepted and adopted by the management team.
